What is Reiki?
Reiki can be defined as a spiritually guided life force energy or
healing energy that is guided by the Higher Intelligence.
The word Reiki (ray-key) is
made from two Japanese words:
REI: Spiritual Wisdom or
Wisdom of God .
KI: Life force, also called
vital life force or Universal Life Force.
Reiki is a technique that allows people, who have
been initiated into Reiki, to tap into a unique utilization of life force
energy. Once a person has had the Reiki Attunements (from a Reiki Master)
and wishes to do a healing, they can simply place their hands
on or near an area of the body, the energy starts to
flow immediately. Reiki treats the whole person, including body, emotions, mind and
spirit. Reiki has its own

intelligence and knows
exactly where to go, what to do and needs no "direction" from the
practitioner. It puts the person treated in a "space" where many
positive responses can occur, some of these being: calming and relaxation,
feelings of peace and joy, relief from pain and inflammation, fatigue,
insomnia, etc. Since Reiki is guided
by the God-consciousness, it can never do harm.
Reiki is a
pure form of healing, not dependent on individual talent or acquired
ability. The feeling of being connected directly to God's healing love and
protection is clearly apparent. This energy works to harmonize, or bring
into balance, the total you: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
You
can easily learn to give Reiki treatments to yourself - a daily treatment
is recommended- to family, friends, clients, enriching your sense of giving
and receiving. The use of Reiki as a relaxation and stress reducing
technique is becoming accepted and widespread; and is totally compatible
with all other healing modalities.
How Does Reiki Work?
We are alive
because life force is flowing through us. Life force flows within the
physical body though pathways called chakras, and meridians. It also flows
around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force nourishes the
organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions.
When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in
one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.
The life
force is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we
accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings
about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to
the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force. This
diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.
Reiki
heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and
charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the
energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts
and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart
and fall away. In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy
pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural
way.
Reiki Can Never Cause Harm
Because
Reiki is guided by the God-consciousness, it can never do harm. It always knows
what a person needs and will adjust itself to create the effect that is
appropriate for them. One never need worry about
whether to give Reiki or not. It is always helpful. In addition, because
the practitioner does not direct the healing and does not decide what to
work on, or what to heal, the practitioner is not in danger of taking on
the karma of the client. Because the practitioner is not doing the healing,
it is also much easier for the ego to stay out of the way and allow the
presence of God to clearly shine through.
Energy is
Never Depleted
Because
it is a channeled healing, the Reiki practitioner's energies are never
depleted. In fact, the Reiki consciousness considers both practitioner and
client to be in need of healing, so both receive treatment. Because of
this, giving a treatment always increases one's energy and leaves one
surrounded with loving feelings of well-being.
Brief History:
Dr. Mikao
Usui who was born in Japan in the 1800's is credited
with the rediscovery of what we call "Reiki". No written records
are known to exist about Dr. Usui's experience.
All current information about Dr. Usui and the
history of Reiki originate from the stories passed on from subsequent Reiki
Masters.
Dr.
Usui was a teacher and when asked by his students
how the Buddha healed people (it should be noted that another version of
the story has the students asking how Jesus healed people) he set off on a
spiritual journey to find the Keys to that special healing ability. Dr. Usui traveled throughout Japan, studying at Buddhist
temples and asking questions on healing. Dr. Usui
learned Chinese and eventually Sanskrit and it was in the Indian Sutras,
written in Sanskrit, that he discovered a formula for contacting a higher
power that could bestow healing. With this information he traveled to Mount
Kuri Yama, where he
fasted, meditated and followed the directions in the formula for twenty-one
days. On the 21st day, a powerful light struck him in the middle of the
forehead. He was shown beautiful colored bubbles, each containing a symbol.
As he contemplated each symbol, he received an Attunement from each symbol
and the knowledge on its use. In this way he was initiated into the use of
the Reiki healing power. Later, and again in meditation, Dr. Usui was given further guidance that concerned the
healing of the spirit and the responsibility of the healee
in the healing process. He was, at that time, given the five Principles of
Reiki.
Dr.
Usui practiced and taught Reiki throughout Japan
for the remainder of his life. Before this transition he asked one of his
students, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, to preserve the
Reiki teaching. Up to this point, the Usui system
of healing (Usui Shiki Ryoho)
consisted of the energy itself, the symbols, the attunement process and the
Reiki principles. Dr. Hayashi opened a Reiki clinic in Tokyo and kept detailed records of the
treatments given. From this information he created the standard hand
positions, the system of three degrees and their initiation process. He
initiated Mrs. Hawayo Takata
of Hawaii
into Reiki mastership before World War II.
Before
his transition, some say that Dr. Hayashi chose Mrs. Takata
to preserve the Reiki teaching. Others say that she was only one of the
ones chosen to carry on the Reiki tradition. Mrs. Takata
brought Reiki to the western world.
