Pilates Certification and Training

Wallis M. Mason certified since September, 2000, in Pilates based MAT and REFORMER techniques, has been teaching these techniques since March, 1999.  Wallis was trained and certified in Pilates by a Licensed Physical Therapist who specializes in treatment of dancers. She continued work for 3 years in that therapeutic environment applying these techniques and assisting with physical therapy patients.

 

Ms. Mason’s Pilates Mat and Reformer study and coursework encompassed approximately 900 hours of private and semi-private training, supervised independent work, and group instruction with Megan Rich, PT.

 

Wallis’s background in Pilates, Ballet, Alexander Technique, and the therapeutic environment enable a strong a compliment to the needs of the individual learning Pilates.

 

Pilates Background

Wallis offers Therapeutic Pilates Mat, Ball, and Reformer Classes in her Studio. Mat work may also be offered at Meadowbrook Swim Club, or other area location.  Prior to opening STUDIO 1 Pilates n Movement, LLC Wallis instructed Pilates Classes at Megan Rich Physical Therapy, The Maryland Athletic Club (MAC), Pickersgill Retirement Community, Company Elite, Gerstung Intersport, and Sinai Lifebridge.

Dance Certification Awards, Etc.

A recipient of the Certificate of Achievement in Ballet Award from The Peabody Institute. Wallis, teaching ballet since 1994, is former faculty of The Baltimore Actors' Theatre Conservatory and The New Hope Academy. She also founded and taught in her own studio. Ms. Mason is a member of the Mid-Atlantic U.S. Advisory Regional Panel of the Royal Academy of Dancing, AAHPERD, and retired Treasurer of the Board of Directors of The Moving Company, a professional dance company.

Wallis interned November '08, at the Minneapolis Grand Prix, regarding inclusion as a provider in the USA Swimming High Performance Network. 

 

Other Training and Experience

Ms. Mason worked in a volunteer capacity for over 6 years and 700 hours in the Emergency Room of a local hospital assisting with the care, comfort and needs of patients and families. From ‘97 – ‘03 she volunteered extensively, 3 - 4 classes weekly, with fitness and movement related activities for those advanced in age, 80s to 100 or more years, in the ambulatory, and non-ambulatory capacities.

Wallis, challenged with Severe Scoliosis herself, personally knows well the full benefits derived from the Pilates Method of movement.  As a result, she is passionate to its teaching.

 

Dance Background

Wallis, owner and director of her own dance studio from ’94- ’03, teaches Royal Academy of Dancing Syllabus, Classical Ballet, and Flamenco techniques. She has been Royal Academy of Dancing Teaching Certified since August, 2000. Ms. Mason studied Classical Ballet at The Peabody Institute, other area studios, and privately 20 years; Flamenco 5 years.
